On Saturday, January 5, 1985, I spent a pleasurable afternoon listening to the tapes of my good friend Milton Marsh. You will discover (if you haven't already) when listening to these seven tracks, that Milton is a talent to be reckoned with. He is a gifted saxophonist, flautist, composer and arranger. On his album entitled, CONTINUUM, he has chosen 17 of the finest musicians to participate in this creative venture.
All but two of the tracks were composed by Marsh. I WONDER WHY I CARE is a modal tune based on the phrygian and mixolydian scales. Milton plays alto saxophone on this composition and you can hear the influences of Coltrane and Kirk during his solo. The beautiful and refreshing SMILES is a ballad with excellent melodic qualities. BLUE BOSSA, one of my favorite Kenny Dorham tunes, features Milton's versatility on soprano saxophone and pianist, Gene Adler. BALLAD is based on a five note motif with Marsh playing flute and piano, accompanied by Jessica Gill on harp. WHEN SUNNY GETS BLUE begins with a most interesting introduction. John Ross provides a pleasant piano background to Milton's interpretation of the melody.
BEHAVIOUR CONTROL and PSYCHIC IMPULSES are examples of Marsh's excellent writing ability in the more "traditional idioms." This composer knows what instruments are capable of doing. Note the bluesy ending on the classically constructed PSYCHIC IMPULSES.
